ABOUT SANITARY SEWER AND WASTEWATER
-
Daily Wastewater Flow: Approximately 1.7 million gallons of wastewater flow through the system every day.
-
Sources of Wastewater: Wastewater is generated from various sources, including:
-
Residential homes (about 200 gallons per day per household)
-
Businesses, industries, and institutions (several thousand gallons per day)
-
-
Collection System: The wastewater from these sources is collected and transported to the Wastewater Treatment Plant through our network of sanitary sewer lines.

WATER CONTAMINANTS
Before wastewater reaches our plant, it contains a wide range of pollutants that can harm human health and the environment. Some of the common contaminants found in raw wastewater include:
-
Grit (sand, gravel, etc.)
-
Trash (debris, litter, etc.)
-
Heavy metals (lead, mercury, etc.)
-
Oil and grease
-
Bacteria (E. coli, Salmonella, etc.)
-
Viruses
-
Other microorganisms
-
-
Nutrients (excess nitrogen, phosphorus, etc.)
-
Pesticides and herbicides
-
Industrial chemicals
-

If left untreated, the raw wastewater would pose a significant threat to Circleville’s clean water environment, contaminating our rivers, streams, and lakes. This would not only harm local wildlife and ecosystems but also impact downstream communities that rely on these water sources for drinking water, recreation, and economic development. Proper treatment of wastewater is crucial to protecting public health, preserving our natural resources, and ensuring a sustainable future for our community.
WATER DISCHARGE: A Cleaner Future
Our Wastewater Treatment Plant takes pride in its role as a guardian of the Scioto River, using a combination of innovative treatment processes to remove an impressive 99% of pollutants from the wastewater. This rigorous treatment ensures that the water is not only safe for discharge but also helps maintain the health and integrity of the river’s ecosystem. By consistently meeting or exceeding regulatory standards, we’re committed to protecting the environment and preserving the beauty of the Scioto River for future generations.
